Mission Statement

Here at the Garaj Lab, we explore emerging nanoscale phenomena between soft and condensed matter. Through nanofabrication and modification of 2D materials, we tailor solid state devices to better understand their interactions with water, ions, and biomolecules. By gaining a fundamental understanding of these nanoscale interactions, we develop new and far reaching applications. We have defined two major applications of interest that require a significant leap intechnology, but with strong benefits.

Application One: Development of a nanopore sensor platform for analysis and sequencing of DNA molecules, and detection and fingerprinting of individual proteins. Such device would lead to long sought goal of extensive medical-test in a droplet of blood. It could revolutionize healthcare and proteomics, beyond the current silent revolution in genomics.

Application Two: Development of next generation graphene membranes for filtration and water desalination. Water is become the most important resource for growing populations, and producing clean water (with reduced cost and increased availability) is one of the most important technological imperatives looking to the future.
